How to Write a Scholarship Essay

A few keys to getting scholarship is an essay, essay is the most important thing of your scholarship packet. Which gives an indication of the student's strength of personality, and with it , an indirect assertion that the university could benefit from his/her participation.

Is it alright to use the first person?
Yes. The essay is about you and what you think about yourself and the field you want to study.

How far back should I go in tracing my background?
Chose the details that you want to highlight to best answer the question they asked you. Provide what information the application asks for. Stories about how you became interested in your field of study may go very far back which is appropriate. More recent accomplishments are best otherwise.

How long should the essay or statement be?
Never exceed the limit that is given. If there isn’t a limit make it no longer than two pages.

How much of the information in my application should I repeat?
Reviewers may not read every detail of your application so highlight information from the application that you really want noted but do not just list things. Use items that are relevant and show how they are relevant.

Should I include negative things such as a low GPA?
Yes,if asked for, and adding an explanation can help. Discussing a negative experience that taught you something or helped you can be a good way to give the reviewer an insight into your character and professional goals.

How personal should I be?
These essays are personal in nature. If they are asking for a personal narrative, give it. If they ask more about educational and professional experience, focus there. Always connect your experiences with your goals and the requirements of the program you are applying to. Let the essay instructions be the guide for your content.

Each essay can be up to 350 words.

Essay question 1: explain your career goals and your educational plan to meet these goals.
Essay question 2: describe a significant challenge, accomplishment or change that has occurred in your life in the last ten years. How did you respond and what did you learn about yourself?
Essay question 3: highlight an activity, interest or responsibility you are involved with outside of your classes. What have you learned from that activity that helps you as a student? (This can include family responsibilities, school clubs/activities or community involvement).


What makes a good scholarship essay

It’s original.
It states clearly why you deserve to win the scholarship.
It avoids meaningless information.
It’s inspirational and positive in tone.
It’s honest.
Make an outline to organize your thoughts.
Pay attention to creating a strong introduction, supporting arguments, and an appropriate conclusion. Every story (including yours) should have a beginning, middle, and end.
Ask others for their feedback. But don't ask them to write it.
Proofread the final version. Wait 24 hours.
Proofread it again before sending it.
